Five people sit cross-legged on a polished floor inside a room, arranged in a loose circle. On the left, an adult in a yellow top and white pants sits with hands raised near the chest. Next to them, a child in a white top and light blue pants mirrors the pose. In the center, another child in a light green top and patterned pants sits with hands raised. To their right, an adult in a black patterned top and grey pants sits with hands raised and holds a small yellow object. On the far right, a child in a pink sleeveless top and grey skirt sits with hands raised. Behind them, large windows with decorative grilles let in daylight, and a wall features a colorful painted mural. A black stand with equipment stands near the back wall.

Breaking Down Nattadavu: Building Coordination Step by Step

Facilitated by a facilitator

Activity

I taught the students Nattadavu, but they found the adavu difficult to understand. Therefore, I first taught them the leg movements separately. After they became familiar with the steps, I introduced the hand movements. I noticed that they had difficulty coordinating both movements at the second and third speeds. Therefore, I focused more on the leg movements to help them understand the adavu clearly. This taught me that breaking down difficult movements into simple parts helps children learn more effectively.

Outcome

  • Technique (adavus)

Students were introduced to the corresponding hand movements.

(We observed it)

Learnings

I learned that breaking down a difficult movement into smaller, simpler parts helps children understand and learn more effectively.
