We ironed the fabric onto stiff paper to stop it from stretching and keep the squares accurate when we cut it. This stopped the material from moving about, so we could cut the shapes properly and get consistent sizes on every piece. Then we tested joining the pieces directly versus pre-joining them first, and it showed how important preparing the fabric is for getting the stitching straight.
